2. Rapid Breathing (Tachypnea)
Why it happens: When oxygen delivery is low, the brain signals the lungs to breathe faster in an attempt to compensate. However, this shallow and rapid breathing is often ineffective and worsens fatigue.
How it feels: Family members may notice the chest rising and falling quickly. The patient often feels restless, anxious, and unable to “catch their breath.”
Medical Tests:
- Respiratory Rate Measurement: More than 20 breaths per minute at rest is abnormal.
- ABG: Confirms low oxygen (hypoxemia) or high carbon dioxide (hypercapnia).
- Capnography: Measures exhaled CO₂ in critical care settings.
