5. Coughing Up Blood (Hemoptysis)
Why it happens: When fragile blood vessels in diseased lungs rupture, blood may appear in sputum. This may occur in tuberculosis, advanced COPD, lung cancer, or severe infection.
How it feels: Patients notice streaks of blood in mucus or bright red clots. Even small amounts should be taken seriously.
Medical Tests:
- Chest CT / Bronchoscopy: Finds source of bleeding.
- CBC (Complete Blood Count): Checks for infection or anemia from blood loss.
- Coagulation Profile: Ensures blood is clotting normally.
